What is laser hair reduction, and how does it work?
Laser hair reduction is a procedure that uses pulsed laser light (highly concentrated light) to damage and destroy hair follicles. The laser’s specific light wavelength is attracted to melanin or pigment in the hair. The hair absorbs this light, which is then converted from light to heat, damaging the hair root and preventing future regrowth. Since hair is always in different growth phases, at any given time, it is either in the resting phase (telogen) or the growth phase (anagen). For this reason, multiple treatments are often needed to “catch” the hair in the best growth phase while it is still attached to the root.
After your treatment, hair usually starts falling out within about a week. However, if patients frequently shave, they may only notice a gradual, patchy fading of hair in the treated areas. When treated, any hair not attached to the root may grow back, but it typically grows back finer. These hairs can be re-treated at future appointments.
Benefits of Laser Hair Reduction
One of the benefits of laser hair reduction is that it is a safe and effective way of removing unwanted hair. Laser hair reduction offers several appealing benefits for men, especially when tailored to common grooming goals and lifestyle preferences. Here are some key advantages:
1. Long-Term Time Saver
Men often deal with the frequent shaving or trimming of areas such as the back, chest, neck, shoulders, and beard line. Laser hair reduction significantly reduces the need for regular maintenance, saving time and hassle in the long run.
2. Reduces Ingrown Hairs
Shaving and waxing can lead to painful ingrown hairs and razor bumps, particularly in areas like the neck or beard line. Laser treatments help eliminate these issues by targeting the hair at the follicle, reducing the chances of hair growing back incorrectly.
3. Cleaner, More Defined Look
Laser hair reduction can create smoother, more defined contours, especially around the beard or neckline. It’s an excellent option for men who want a clean, professional appearance without daily upkeep.
4. Improved Skin Comfort
By reducing hair growth, the skin is less prone to irritation, redness, and folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), which is common in areas with thick or coarse hair.
5. Boosts Confidence
Less body hair in areas like the back, chest, or shoulders can increase comfort and confidence, especially during warmer months or workouts when excess hair can trap sweat and cause discomfort.
6. Customizable and Safe
Laser hair reduction is highly customizable for different skin types, hair types, and treatment areas, making it a safe and effective option for a wide range of men’s grooming needs.

Skin Concerns Men Face
The following are skin concerns men typically deal with and some ways to manage these concerns:
- Acne: Men often experience acne breakouts, both on their face and their body, due to hormonal changes, excess oil production, or poor skin care habits. Washing daily and using a mild skin cleanser is effective. Consult with your Dermatologist for suggestions on different topical medicines that you can use to treat your acne. In-office treatments, such as laser treatments and chemical peels, can be very effective.
- Razor Burn: Shaving can lead to razor burn, causing redness, irritation, and ingrown hairs. The American Academy of Dermatology offers some excellent men’s skin care tips, including shaving tips to help prevent razor burn.
- Dry Skin: Men’s skin tends to be oilier, but dryness can still occur, especially during colder months or due to excessive cleansing. Use a light moisturizer once a day or as needed in areas with extra dryness.
- Sun Damage: Exposure to harmful UV rays can lead to premature aging, sunspots, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin.
- Wrinkles and Fine Lines: Aging affects men’s skin as well, leading to wrinkles and fine lines, particularly around the eyes and forehead. Sun protection is essential in preventing early aging. BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers are effective ways to treat these signs of aging. Microneedling and chemical peels are also great non-invasive treatments for men.
- Hyperpigmentation: Dark spots or patches may appear on the skin due to factors such as sun damage, acne scars, or hormonal changes. The Fraxel® DUAL laser is excellent for sunspots, wrinkles, scars, and sagging skin.
- Dark Circles: Men can develop dark circles under their eyes due to genetic factors, insufficient sleep, stress, or poor blood circulation.
- Ingrown Hairs: Shaving, especially against the grain, can lead to ingrown hairs, resulting in red bumps and discomfort. For some individuals, laser hair reduction treatments may be a viable consideration.
- Eczema and Psoriasis: Skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis can affect men, leading to redness, itching, and flaky skin. Your Dermatology Provider can create a personalized plan for you, tailored to your condition, that can help minimize flare-ups.
- Texture: Men’s skin can sometimes have a rough texture due to the buildup of dead skin cells, lack of exfoliation, or environmental factors.
