Hyperhidrosis is the scientific term for abnormally excessive sweating, which is not necessarily related to being heated or exercising. If you experience it, you may sweat so much that it soaks through your clothes or drips off your hands or arms. It can be a disrupting skin condition and may even cause social anxiety or embarrassment. Commonly this involves underarm sweat or sweating of the palms.
Diagnosing Hyperhidrosis
Your Provider will start with an exam, including closely examining the areas of your body that sweat excessively and asking you questions to understand your specific situation. There may sometimes be other tests that are necessary as well.
Treatment of Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis treatment options often involve first trying prescription-strength antiperspirants. If these don’t help, you may need to try different medications or therapies. Sometimes an underlying cause of your excessive sweating may be found, so it can be treated to help.
BOTOX® Cosmetic for Excessive Sweating
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), “Your [Provider] can inject a weak form of [BOTOX] into your underarms. To treat excessive sweating, a patient will need to have very tiny amounts injected in many areas of the underarms. When performed properly, patients have little pain or discomfort.”BOTOX injections can temporarily help block a chemical in the body that stimulates the sweat glands. Most patients notice results as soon as four to five days after receiving treatment. Reduced sweating usually lasts about four to six months, and can sometimes last longer. If and when it returns, you can retreat it.
