LASER HAIR REMOVAL

How Does It Work?

Each individual hair in our body sits in a hair follicle within our skin, and each hair follicle grows hair through a “food supply.” This food supply gives all the nutrients the hair needs to grow and thrive. Each laser treatment will help destroy the food supply, resulting in thinning and reduced hair growth. The pigment in your hair absorbs light from the laser and converts it to heat. This heat is enough to damage the target hair follicle while the surrounding tissue is left untouched. The goal of the laser procedure is to damage the hair follicle beyond repair so that it will stop regenerating/creating new hair. About a week after your treatment, you can expect the hairs to fall out of the follicle on their own.

Laser treatments will only work on hair in growth or anagen phases. This is the only time that the hair connects to the hair follicle. At any one time, the hair in your body is going through different phases. Therefore, when you go in for your first laser hair removal treatment, only about 20% of your hair will be affected. Depending on your goals, the best results are achieved with 6 – 12 treatments scheduled a few weeks apart to help entirely reduce the hair.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal works on any area with hair. Some areas we treat are the upper lip, chin, legs, Brazilians, toes, and more.

If you are concerned that laser treatments are painful, laser technology has come a long way and is much more tolerable than it was years ago. Most people compare it to feeling a rubber band snap against their skin. Of course, everyone’s pain level differs, and some areas are more sensitive than others. For your comfort, we can numb the site to be treated. After your treatment, you can expect some redness that usually dissipates within a few hours.

One of the other benefits of laser hair removal is that each treatment doesn’t necessarily take much time. How long your treatment takes depends on the areas you would like treated. Larger areas, such as the legs and back, can take up to an hour, while smaller areas, such as the upper lip and chin, can take as little as fifteen minutes.

How Do I Prepare for My Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

Our before and after care recommendations to our patients include the following:

Before Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment

  • Discontinue photosensitive medications or topicals 3-5 days before the appointment to avoid burns.
  • No sun exposure seven days before your appointment.
  • Shave the area to be treated 24 hours before the appointment. This is very important to the success of your treatment.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or use other hair removal methods weeks before treatment.

After Your Appointment

  • No sun exposure for seven days after your treatment. If you are going to be outside, make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher).
  • No swimming in pools, spas, lakes, or oceans for seven days.
  • Exfoliate the treated area using an exfoliation glove three days after your appointment to avoid ingrown hairs.
  • During the laser treatment series, it’s best NOT to use any other hair removal methods, such as waxing or tweezing. Only shaving is okay in between appointments until you complete your treatments.

CHEMICAL PEELS 101

Mayo Clinic defines a chemical peel as a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. This causes the outermost layers of dead skin to flake or “peel” off, revealing healthier, smoother, more glowing skin. Chemical peels speed up our skin’s self-renewal and rejuvenation process. They help with aging by minimizing wrinkles and fine lines, assisting with uneven skin tone, and improving texture like acne scars and rough, scaly skin.

There is a wide variety of chemical peel options suited for every skin type and condition. DermaSpa at Bend Dermatology Clinic offers the following chemical peels:

Salicylic Acid Peels

Salicylic acid peels are a helpful solution for oily and acne-prone skin. They can also brighten the skin with minimal downtime.

Glycolic Acid Peels

Glycolic acid peels exfoliate and hydrate, brighten the skin, and increase the skin’s ability to absorb serums and moisturizers. This peel can also help treat melasma.

Lactic Acid Peels

Lactic acid peels exfoliate the top layer of cells and reveal fresh, healthy skin. They are a good choice for treating age spots and giving skin a healthy glow.

What to Expect When You Get a Chemical Peel

The first step towards getting a chemical peel is a consultation with a Dermatology Provider. They will examine your skin and discuss your options, goals, and expectations. This allows the Dermatology Provider to create a plan specific to you. Your skin will be prepared for the peel on the day of your treatment. Application procedures vary depending on the type of chemical peel selected. Most people will feel some tingling or a burning sensation immediately following the application, and you may experience some redness. The next day, tightness can be expected and will last until the peeling process begins, typically within a couple of days of the treatment.

To aid in recovery and maximize the benefits of the chemical peel, we suggest our patients avoid sun exposure and use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. When stepping outside, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. For the best results, follow the instructions given to you by your Dermatology Provider.

DERMAPLANING

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation procedure that uses a special surgical blade to slough away the top layer of the epidermis gently. After the dead skin cells are removed, the skin is left smooth and vibrant.

A dermaplaning facial is ideal for anyone interested in removing vellus facial hair (peach fuzz), which can trap excess dirt and oil.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

Dermaplaning facials are safe for most patients with little risk of side effects. We work to make patients very comfortable during the procedure, which shouldn’t hurt. Your Aesthetician will only remove the very top layer of unwanted hair and dead skin cells. The scraping process should last approximately 20-30 minutes.

After Your Dermaplaning Facial

This treatment requires no downtime for recovery, so it’s easy and convenient. However, after a dermaplaning facial, your skin may be a bit sensitive, so you should avoid direct sunlight.

HYDRAFACIAL®

HydraFacial is an in-office medical-grade facial treatment that is non-invasive and virtually painless. You may have heard it being called a hydradermabrasion treatment. HydraFacial uses Vortex Fusion Technology to gently and effectively remove a layer of dead skin, dirt, debris, and impurities while hydrating and soothing your skin. Its patented technology includes three steps:

Step 1: Cleanse and peel –uncover a new layer of skin with gentle exfoliation and relaxing resurfacing.

Step 2: Extract and hydrate—A strong, painless vacuum suction safely removes debris, blackheads, and impurities from pores while simultaneously hydrating your skin.

Step 3: Infuse and protect—This part of the treatment infuses serums explicitly selected for your skin type and skin care goals to maximize your glow.

HydraFacial has been shown to help with a variety of skin issues, including:

  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Lightening dark spots and patches
  • Cleaning clogged pores
  • Reducing enlarged pores
  • Clearing up mild acne
  • Refining skin texture
  • Improving elasticity and firmness

The HydraFacial Advantage

HydraFacial is a suitable choice for all skin types due to its gentle nature. This treatment offers a high degree of customization, allowing you and your Certified Advanced Aesthetician to tailor it to your unique skin type and specific goals. Upon completing the procedure, you will notice immediate results, experiencing smoother and more radiant skin that outlasts the effects of a typical facial.

Another great advantage is that no recovery time is required, enabling you to return to your regular daily activities immediately. We recommend refraining from using makeup for the rest of the day, allowing your skin to absorb the rejuvenating benefits fully. Lastly, HydraFacial can be applied to various body areas, including the neck, décolleté, hands, arms, and back, making it a versatile option for comprehensive skin care.
