How do Neurotoxin Injectables Work?

Injectable neurotoxins (wrinkle-relaxing botulinum toxin type A) are the most common non-invasive aesthetic procedure in the U.S., according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. While collectively, they are commonly called “Botox,” there are actually five different FDA-approved neurotoxins: BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and DAXXIFY. The newest entry in the neurotoxin market is DAXXIFY, which received FDA approval in September 2022.

All neurotoxins are injectable solutions that temporarily block nerve receptors in the muscle, preventing lines and wrinkles from forming. They can also treat muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and overactive bladders.

These injectable treatments are fast, minimally invasive, and have little to no downtime. Most people return to work or normal activities immediately after the procedure. BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin generally last three to four months.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX Cosmetic has been around for a long time. It’s a trusted product that has been widely used since 2002. Since its FDA approval in 2013, millions of men and women have tried it and continue to use it because it provides real, noticeable results. This prescription medication is injected into the muscles. It temporarily improves signs of aging, such as moderate to severe crow’s feet lines, forehead lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.

Lines and deep wrinkles in the face are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles when you smile, laugh, or frown. BOTOX Cosmetic, a purified protein derivative, can effectively minimize, prevent, and reverse many of the lines between your eyebrows, across your forehead, and around your eyes. BOTOX Cosmetic keeps the muscles relaxed by blocking impulses from the nerves to the tiny facial muscles related to expression, preventing contraction.

XEOMIN®

XEOMIN is an FDA-approved, clinically-proven neurotoxin that blocks muscle contractions that can cause frown lines and other expression lines. It is a prescription medication injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. XEOMIN’s double-filtered formula removes unnecessary proteins, so you get only what’s needed for smoother frown lines, treatment after treatment.

Dysport®

Dysport® is a natural-looking, fast-acting, and long-lasting injection to help smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar line) in adults less than 65 years old. The treatment is more diluted than others and diffuses to a larger area upon injection. Repetitive facial movements and muscle contractions cause wrinkles, and Dysport works by temporarily reducing specific muscle activity. Results typically appear around 2-3 days after receiving the injections and can last up to 5 months with just one treatment.

LET’S TALK LASERS

DermaSpa offers various Cosmetic Dermatology treatments such as microneedling, HydraFacial®, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, and much more. Depending on what your cosmetic goals and needs are, we are sure to have a treatment that will help. We also offer a variety of laser treatments which offer a very effective way to achieve different cosmetic goals.

Basics You Need to Know About Lasers

Though you don’t need to know everything there is to know about cosmetic lasers, it doesn’t hurt to learn the basics before deciding on treatment. In addition, being informed helps you have a more productive consultation with your Dermatology Provider.

Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. What does that mean for you? Lasers use a focused beam of light that uses a precise color or wavelength to target a specific area of the skin while leaving the skin around it unharmed. These different wavelengths are absorbed by different targets in the skin, which are converted into heat energy when they hit the target. For example, blood absorbs yellow light wavelengths, which would be used for skin redness concerns. So, let’s look at some terms you might come across that relate to the type of laser used.

Ablative v. Non-ablative

Ablative lasers remove a thin layer of the outer skin (epidermis) while heating the underlying skin (dermis), stimulating collagen growth. As the epidermis heals, it regrows skin tissue that appears smoother and tighter. These treatments are considered more aggressive, leading to a longer recovery while your skin heals.

Non-ablative lasers heat the underlying skin tissue without harming the surface skin so that your body produces new collagen. This is a milder treatment than an ablative laser, leading to a faster recovery.

Fractionated v. Non-fractionated

A fractionated laser is a type of laser that can be ablative or non-ablative. It delivers microscopic columns of thermal damage throughout the tissue area. Fractionated lasers were developed for shorter recovery times and to reduce the risk of side effects since they only treat a “fraction” of the skin instead of the whole surface. Some lasers under this category include pulsed-dye lasers, erbium lasers, and light therapy lasers.

Non-fractionated lasers use a solid beam of laser energy to affect the entire targeted skin area. This makes them more aggressive than fractionated lasers, which are used for more severe issues such as deeper wrinkles, age spots, and scars.

CO2 Lasers – One of the first and highest-powered lasers that remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage to the surrounding tissue by using carbon dioxide gas.
