JOIN OUR EXPERT TEAM: RAISING SKIN CANCER AWARENESS AND PREVENTION
Oregon’s stunning landscapes make it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, but sun exposure remains a major risk. With 1,300 new melanoma cases diagnosed annually, Oregon ranks among the top states for this serious form of skin cancer. To recognize Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Mariah Johnson, Fellowship-Trained Mohs Surgeon and Board-Certified Dermatologist at Bend Dermatology Clinic, encourages Central Oregonians to stay vigilant about UV protection and social media skin care myths.
“Many believe our cloudy weather protects them, but UV rays penetrate clouds and reflect off snow and water,” says Dr. Johnson. “No matter the season, sunscreen and regular skin checks are key to preventing and detecting skin cancer early.”
Despite growing misinformation online, sunscreen remains one of the best defenses—reducing the risk of skin cancer by up to 50%. Sun-safe habits like wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses should start early.
“At Bend Dermatology Clinic, we’re committed to educating our patients and providing expert care,” adds Dr. Johnson. “Whether you need prevention strategies or treatment options, our Dermatology team is here to help you protect your skin and health.”
