Angiomas are benign growths made up of small blood vessels. They can appear anywhere on the body. The three most common types are cherry angiomas, spider angiomas, and angiokeratomas.

Occasionally, an angioma may become irritated from external factors such as rubbing against clothing and will need to be removed to avoid further problems. However, since the majority of angiomas are harmless, most people have them treated for cosmetic reasons.

Cherry Angiomas

Cherry angiomas are also called senile angiomas, and cherry hemangiomas. Deriving their name from their color, they are red, roundish, mole-like growths. They often form on women between the ages of 30 and 50 and are more common on fairer skin complexions. Cherry angiomas also often correlate with estrogen levels, and commonly appear during pregnancy and postpartum. These angiomas are typically benign but should be examined by a professional to ensure they are not malignant.

Spider Angiomas

Spider angiomas are swollen blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface. Deriving their name from their appearance, these often appear as red lines extending from a central red spot resembling the shape of a spider. These are also correlated with estrogen levels and are more commonly found on pregnant women. Spider angiomas are typically benign but should be examined by a medical professional.

Angiokeratomas

Angiokeratoma is a term for a range of dilated capillary manifestations. They appear as dark red, brown, or bluish spots, and are often rough to the touch. Angiokeratomas often form around the genital areas of both men and women. While angiokeratomas are typically benign, they can be a symptom of Fabry Disease, a rare and potentially life-threatening genetic disease that should receive immediate attention.

Angioma Removal and Treatment

There are three common ways to remove them. Electrodesiccation uses an electric needle to destroy the blood vessels in the growth. Cryosurgery involves using liquid nitrogen to freeze away the damaged cells. Finally, laser treatment uses a beam of intense, focused light to remove the growth.
